The Sartorialist is a fashion blog by Scott Schuman in New York which has also inspired a whole generation of bloggers and viewers alike.Scott Schuman began carrying a digital camera around on the streets of New York City, taking pictures of people who had dressed in a way that caught his eye, and then posting them to his blog, sometimes with comments about what he’d found. Schuman began The Sartorialist with the idea of creating a two-way dialogue about the world of fashion and its relationship to daily life. When you come across his beautiful photographs you immediately capture the essence of his subjects that reminds us that style is an expression of ourselves.
The book is a study of individual personal style, packed full of Schuman’s renowned street style photography taken all over the world. It follows on from his first foray into publishing, which was simply titled, The Sartorialist – after his hugely-popular fashion blog of the same name.
“I call it ‘Closer’ because my shooting style has evolved,” Schuman told us. “I’ve gotten closer to what I want to be shooting in terms of fashion and cultural shots, but also closer portraits. There is still fashion in the shot, but the image is really about the face – about the real, specific personality of a person, as opposed to a full body portrait.”
